    For travel, I'd take the zoom everyday of the week over the 35 which is more of a street photography lens.

    I took a 35mm f1.8 and a 24-70 f2.8 for my recent travel to Italy and used mostly the 35mm lens. Some days i needed a wider lens but the drawbacks of the zoom lens (weight, bulky and attract more attention) outweigh the pros of it. When I am looking at the pictures now I thought I took some of those pictures with the zoom lens where in fact after checking the exit I realized they were with the 35mm. I think taking the two lenses was the right decision.

    So you don't need a model release even when the photo is being published in magazines like National Geographic? What if it is on the cover?

    • @mitchellkphotos
      @mitchellkphotos 10 дней назад

      generally not, but now the rules may be changing country to country, so you'd have to research, but generally magazines like Nat Geo are editorial use, not commercial, so generally it's ok. The magazine is not selling anything with that image but itself. As soon as you're selling something with the image - that's when you need a release in most of the world.

    tyvm for the video. I've taken the survey, but to be honest, I enjoy your videos more for the ride (and knowledge) that I'm currently enjoying here on RUclips. Whichever platform you choose, I hope it is not set up to take as much personal info as often as possible. This is why I avoid 'free' platforms like Discord - there is always a catch. I love traveling and I love taking photographs of my travels, but I don't consider myself a 'travel' photographer. I enjoy photographing man-made things coinciding with nature, textures colors and shapes. I'm not so much into people photography, but if I see something that grabs me I'll take a pic. Whatever you charge for maintaining this 'community', I hope it is worth the time and effort of keeping humans corralled. It doesn't look hard at all - it looks impossible. My personal preference would be to post my next destination and learn tips on where to go and how to get there if someone has already made the trip. I am all for feedback, but it seems all too easy to get buried by the amount of images that will come your way. I wish you the best of luck!

    Not a fan of the overuse of the blurry background. I know y’all do it because ‘everyone else does it’s, but maybe ask yourself “why am I doing it” because actually doing it. In some situations it can probably work but for most situations you’re just isolating the subject from its environment. Which is a massive part of who they are. It also draws in the eye and distracts from the subject because the human eye/brain tend to pick out abnormalities. This is probably the opposite of what you think you’re doing. In reality you’re drawing attention away from your subject when you do the blurry background. That is why everyone notices your ‘artistic use of the bokeh’. When the entire point of the technique is to isolate the subject. I also think that often when it IS appropriate that the background isn’t blurred enough. There shouldn’t be enough information left for my brain to have an opportunity to easily decipher what it’s seeing because again, that will draw the eye away from the subject. The background needs to be blurry to the point if making the subject pop or the effect doesn’t work at all. Just my 2 cents.

    Why do I do a photo-tour? I go on a photo tour (no more than 10 guests - often 5). I go to experience a special place and more importantly unique peoples for the first time. I then return alone again or even more times utilizing the local company and guides that I have encountered on the "photo tour". My return trips are typically one-half the price or twice the length, once both, for what I paid for the first visit. The benefit is that the guide is familiar with the way I operate and what my photography goals are. It is the local company and local guides who do all the work and have all the local knowledge and local contacts. This has worked out fabulously for me in Cambodia, Ladakh India, Nepal, and Omo Valley in Ethiopia.

    Back in the day before digital photography when every photo you took meant paying for processing (unless you were processing your own photos and then you could be a little more selective) photos sniping was probably a lot more common. He wanted to make sure that you were really clear and certain about the photo you were going to take before you actually snap the picture. I still have this mindset unless I’m photographing flowers which I’m super passionate about. Then I just take massive photos and them and and left with thousands of photos to go through at the end of the day. But Bob Ross used to say there are no mistakes, just happy little accidents. 😊

    my trick for getting the "real" emotions and not a posted picture is to wait. People can only hold themselves for like 5-6 seconds - especially in a group. Then they usually break up. which is when I hit the shutter a few times. I also tell people to "look more happy" which is somewhat sarcastic - but can often break their poker face and bring out the real emotions, the way others see and remember them. I do capture motion blur in portraits, but whipping and twisting my camera. timing the rear curtrain flash with the right framing. It really brings the background into disarray and can at times look like reverse light painting. I don't publicly share those images or post to instagram - the sensitivity of the pictures and the privacy I provide allow me to keep capturing these moments and only share them with those pictured.

    The best lens is that which you use all day long. Most who start with a zoom will seldomly switch to a prime. As the switch of lenses can be a hazzle and by Sony often means you have to clean the sensor 😊. 35 mm on FE or 20 on apsc crop are most perfect for a more stealthy street photography like in old days 😊. A quite good option is the Tamron FF 17-28 mm. Esp if you are not willing to pay for the comparable gmaster Sony lens. But if you don't mind the financial aspect and the size of a bit larger to say touristy size take the G master zoom from 16 to 35 mm

Your images capture the feeling of what it's like to be there. I'm glad that you concentrate on photographing the emotions of your subects rather than concentrating on the rule of thirds, framing the subject, or whatever rule a technical photographer might harp on. Honestly it took me several minutes of looking at your photos to even notice that you threw some of the photography rules out the window. You seem to understand that the most important rule of taking images is finding the joy in the moment rather than some rule that so many photographers seem to insist that we observe. Thank you for sharing, and I intend to watch more of your work.

    I had this come up during my watch later... while editing photos. And the one direction I took to heart directly was the idea of challenging the viewer intellectually. Sadly I am not doing much photography anymore - but I now want to take this approach for next time. Ask a question with the photo. As I have a lot of portraits in front of me, there isn't much questions to be asked. So maybe I engage differently next time. pack a wider lens to avoid doing too much portrait

    I enjoyed this Mitchell and your daughter is precious! You said you want her to be strong and brave but she already is. 😀 I love the color grading on your video btw. I love that she knew "arbusto". Cheers.

      Haha, thank you. She speaks Spanish fluently after 3 years in Peru. 🤣 Knows many words that I don't.
